Movie Review: DevD

Don’t miss it

It has been a pleasant surprise that none of the so called activist groups policing moral values in the country has yet demanded a ban on Anurag Kashyap’s latest work on celluloid DevD.

Calling DevD as an adapted version of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s epic novel Devdas would be an understatement. Though inspired by the novel, the movie has taken the depiction of man-woman relationship to the heights that nobody dared to scale in the Indian cinema – either mainstream or parallel -- so far.

DevD is a modern day, very loud and very bold version of the novel of historical significance to many. While most of the plot of the movie is similar to the original epic, the former ends on a positive note thus bucking the sad and tragic end portrayed in the novel.

It’s a must watch for those who dare to accept the basic instincts of human beings as they are and it will be a big shocker for those who cannot.

Movie review: Delhi 6

Skip

It is hard to figure out whether Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra wanted to make a documentary on the capital city of the country or a movie on Hindu-Muslim tensions in the country as a whole.

Unfortunately, the confusion is not limited only to the audience. It can also be noticed in the screenplay and the direction. The result is that the first half of the movie ends up being a showcase of Delhi, the biggest city in the northern part of India while the second half throws light on how fragile the religious sentiments can be.

The movie has some high points and some very good dialogues. These, however, lose their significance in the bigger scheme of things. For instance, the scene wherein Abhishek Bachhan gets hyper on the concept of God is remarkable. Another instance is where Rishi Kapoor describes the helplessness of the localites over the current social system.

Overall, the movie appears to be more like a collage of things without much coherence among the pieces. The effort is not worth the money. Better avoid.
