Movie Review: Me Shivaji Raje Bhosale Boltoy (Marathi)

Don't miss it

I don’t remember when was the last time I saw a Marathi movie based on such a swiftly written script as that of Me Shivaji…and clever in its demeanour. The script relies on some sort of fantasy to resolve problems in daily life. And in that process, it delves deeper into harsh realities of the Marathi community as a whole often ridiculing and holding the community responsible for its own problems.

One of my friends believes that some movies have real heroes different from the ones we see on the screen. These ‘different real’ heroes are the people who in a way give a movie its life and soul. For instance, according to him the hero of Delhi-6 was AR Rehman since music was the key factor of the movie. Going by this logic, the hero of Me Shivaji… is the script writer Mahesh Manjrekar who has also played the role of Shivaji in the movie.

However, being based on fantasy, the script does have its limitations and at times toes the line of incredibility. Also, in its first 15-20 minutes the movie appears to be a drab trying to take the audience towards a nadir of frustration. But that eventually helps in its spectacular ascension later on.

The movie scores well on technical front. In fact some of the things such as keeping the camera focused too tightly on the faces of key characters in crucial situations and vibrant background score make the movie one of the best in its genre.

So, if you can bear with what you see in the first few minutes of the movie then chances are you would like what you see later on! And, that is irrespective of whether you are Marathi or not!!
